Hungary's agro-ecological endowments, ploughlands and the afforestation rates allow the proportion of renewable energy to be the largest. Mainly plantations established for energy purposes can be used to maintain this goal. It can provide raw material for the energy industry for years or decades.
The Biomass Action Plan of the European Comission
The EU is committed to the area of renewable energy sources. According to the statement of Marian Fischer Boel, Comissioner (meaning the utilization of biomass as an energy source): „For me this is the first priority”.
The agrocultural connections of renewable energy sources The Biomass Action Plan notes that in the EU the share of biomass of renewable energy sources is about 50%. Considering Hungary’s capabilities (limited water and wind energy potencial) this rate is almost 80%. The most important agro-economic connection is that the energetic demand induces additional needs on the market creating new, solvent markets. Through this the production and market structure of agriculture can be influenced in a positive way and the pressure on traditional manufacturers can be reduced. In Hungary the priority is to deduce the grain excess, get prepared for the change of the intervention system by developing a balanced, independent and stable market structure by the end of that. The advantages of biomass utilization - the conditions of the environment can improve - as for the climate change it doesn’t encuber the environment or at least not as much as fossil energy sources, thereby contributing to comply with the Kyoto commitment, and on the international markets a marketable CO2 saving can arise - it can exchange fossil energy sources so depence on traditional energy sources can be reduced - import charges can be reduced, thereby improving the payment balance - it can provide new workplaces - it can increase the added value, GDP and the export - it can help changing the agriculrural structure, which has a motivating effect on rural life and keep the population sedentary - increasing the utilization of renewal energy sources allows the usage of high-level technologies - turning the otherwise harmful materials into energy reduces the burden of the environment it represents our country’s commitment to the environment here at home and also in the EU The possibilities of biomass utilization Among renewal energy sources biomass has the biggest rate especially because of the usage of firewood The definition of biomass includes firewood, plants grown for energetic goals, agricultural and forestry by-products, wastes. In Hungary biomass potencial is favorable, it is a potential break-out point to utilize fields and also can increase employment. It means a dominant share of utilizing raw materials to burn them. Solid biomass firing Increasing the share of solid biomass usage (wood, energy crops and agricultural waste) has favorable moves on the greenhouse effect because the quantity of CO2 getting into the air is not more than what these plants build in during their growth while doing photosynthesis. In addition we have to consider other environmental effects.
